Brian K. Butler

Brian K. Butler is an educational presenter with over 30 years of experience who has worked with thousands of schools throughout the U.S.A., Australia, and Canada presenting on the PLC at Work and RTI at Work models. Brian is a retired principal who last served at Mason Crest Elementary School in Fairfax County, Virginia in 2017. Under Brian’s leadership, Mason Crest received Solution Tree’s first annual DuFour Award in 2016.

Brian K. Butler

Brian K. Butler is an educational presenter with over 30 years of experience who has worked with thousands of schools throughout the U.S.A., Australia, and Canada presenting on the PLC at Work and RTI at Work models. Brian is a retired principal who last served at Mason Crest Elementary School in Fairfax County, Virginia in 2017. Under Brian’s leadership, Mason Crest received Solution Tree’s first annual DuFour Award in 2016. The honor, named for Professional Learning Communities at Work (PLC) process architect Richard DuFour which credits high-performing PLCs that demonstrate exceptional levels of student achievement. The recipient of the DuFour Award is the highest award that a PLC at Work school can achieve. For that year Mason Crest was the model of all model from around the world. The school received $25,000 as part of the award.

Brian has also been a principal and an assistant principal for other schools in Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS). With Brian as principal, Mount Eagle Elementary, the school was also recognized as a model PLC at Work. As assistant principal of Lemon Road Elementary, Brian with Principal Dr. Carolyn Miller helped lead staff to high levels of collaboration—an approach he shares with parent groups, teachers, schools’ staff, and administrators to encourage teamwork among stakeholders. Lemon Road also was a model PLC at Work school.

During his time as a principal at Mount Eagle Elementary (2006-2011), Brian was named a finalist for FCPS Principal of the Year for demonstrating superior leadership qualities and creating an exceptional educational environment.

A former professional basketball player in the European League, Brian holds a bachelor’s degree in speech communications from The George Washington University, and a teacher’s certification in physical education and a master’s degree in school counseling, both from George Mason University. Brian also earned an administrative endorsement from the University of Virginia.

Brian and his wife Kathleen have two adult daughters, Alison and Emily.
