Claudia Bertolone-Smith

Claudia Bertolone-Smith, PhD, is an associate professor in the School of Education at California State University, Chico. She has been an educator since 1990, with experience teaching first grade through seventh grade. She has a wide range of educational experiences—from teaching in an urban alternative elementary school focused on involving parents in education to teaching in a rural environment in schools with diverse populations, varied socioeconomic statuses, and a conservative approach to education. In her current position, Dr. Bertolone-Smith teaches credential program courses in mathematics education.

As a California Mathematics Council–North and Mount Lassen Mathematics Council board member, she has presented throughout the United States on topics such as the development of a positive mathematics identity, units coordination with fractions, mathematics discussion routines, and addressing challenging student behaviors that get in the way of learning.

Dr. Bertolone-Smith received a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from the University of Oregon, a master’s degree in mathematics education from Walden University, and a doctorate in curriculum, teaching, and learning with a focus on mathematics education from the University of Nevada, Reno.
