Emily Bonner

Emily Bonner, PhD, is a professor of curriculum and instruction in mathematics education and the associate dean for research and faculty affairs at the University of Texas at San Antonio. Her interests include equity in K–12 mathematics classrooms, culturally responsive mathematics teaching, action research, and supporting students living in poverty.

Dr. Bonner has published work in numerous venues, including the Journal of Mathematics and Culture, Journal for Mathematics Teacher Education, and Educational Studies in Mathematics. She has also coauthored several chapters for the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. She is the institutional principal investigator for the Community Math Project, a cross-institutional collaboration funded by the United States Department of Education. She has also served as the codirector of the San Antonio Mathematics Collaborative professional development project and the South Texas STEM Center for Educators.

Her memberships include the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics, the Association for Mathematics Teacher Educators, and the American Educational Research Association.

Dr. Bonner received her bachelor’s degree in mathematics, as well as her master of arts in teaching degree, from Trinity University. She subsequently taught in Houston public schools for several years before pursuing her PhD in curriculum and instruction. She received her PhD in mathematics education from the University of Florida in 2009, at which time she joined the faculty at the University of Texas at San Antonio.
