Michael Bayewitz is the principal of Cloverly Elementary School in Silver Spring, Maryland. He has previously served as a director of elementary schools, principal, assistant principal, and classroom teacher. Through his twenty-four years of educational experience, he has provided supervision and direct support to more than seventy schools at the elementary, middle, and high school level.
From 2007 to 2012, Michael served as principal of Broad Acres Elementary School in Silver Spring, Maryland. Through the building of a PLC, Broad Acres gained national attention for its dramatic increases in student achievement At the elementary school, 95 percent of students receive free and reduced-price meals—the highest percentage in the district—and 70 percent of the students are English learners. Just ten years ago, fewer than 20 percent of students passed state exams. With a collaborative culture, targeted interventions, and a unique strategy for parent engagement, student achievement improved. In 2012, Broad Acres reached 88 percent proficiency in reading and 95 percent in math on the Maryland State Assessment.
Michael received the 2011 Dr. Edward Shirley Award for excellence in educational administration and supervision.
