Debra E. Lane

Debra Lane, EdD, has been an educator for more than 30 years, serving both as a teacher and as an administrator in the United States and abroad. She has led several schools as principal, including Shanghai American School, one of the world's leading international schools. Dr. Lane has taught grades from preK through middle school, as well as gifted and talented classes in Fairfax County Public Schools and in the Dominican Republic. Most recently, she was director of talent development at Alexandria City Public Schools.

Dr. Lane’s teaching career includes undergraduate and graduate classes at George Mason University as well as at the University of Virginia. As part of her work with the National Staff Development Council, she applied current research in adult learning to her work on staff development, focusing on professional learning communities. She has presented at international conferences for numerous organizations—including the Near East South Asia Council of Overseas Schools, Tri-State Educators, and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics—and also through her work with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation and the National Science Foundation.

Currently, Dr. Lane is working on federal government grants focusing on transformative leadership and increasing teachers’ leadership and instructional roles across the United States, Central America, and South America. She has also participated in accreditation teams in China and Hong Kong with the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. She was nominated for Virginia Principal of the Year and won the Chesapeake Bay Foundation Educator of the Year award in 2009. She serves as a board member with NoVA Outside, GrandInvolve, the Virginia Association for Environmental Education, the Fall for the Book literacy festival at George Mason University, and the George Mason University Curriculum Advisory Council.

She holds a bachelor’s degree from Baylor University, master's degrees from Virginia Tech and George Mason University, and a doctorate from the University of Virginia.
