Jamie Virga, EdD, has over 35 years of experience as a teacher, principal, professional developer, principal coach, and associate superintendent. As a Solution Tree associate, he works to support schools and districts with implementing Professional Learning Communities at Work® and RTI at Work™ processes. As principal of Viers Mill Elementary in Montgomery County, a Title I school with students from 42 countries who spoke 32 different languages, Jamie led staff efforts to create a professional learning community culture. Viers Mill was named a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence in 2005.
Jamie then became founding director of the Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) Professional Learning Communities Institute (PLCI), an innovative program of professional development for school leadership teams. Over 40 MCPS schools have completed the two-year PLCI program, and analysis of data shows that these schools increase student achievement at a rate that surpasses state and county averages. The American Productivity and Quality Center recognized MCPS as a Benchmark District for support of PLCs.
Jamie received the Salute to Leadership Award from the National Association of Elementary School Principals in recognition of his work as principal of Viers Mill. He also was honored by the Maryland Coalition for Inclusive Education as the 2005 Educator of the Year from MCPS. Jamie and members of his staff are featured in the Solution Tree DVD Collaborative Teams in Professional Learning Communities at Work™.
Jamie holds master’s degrees in education from Towson University and Johns Hopkins University. He is completing doctoral work in educational policy and leadership at the University of Maryland.
