Tonya Balch

Dr. Tonya Balch is a professor in the Department of Applied Clinical and Educational Sciences in the Bayh College of Education at Indiana State University and has been the program coordinator for the School Counseling M.Ed. program for 15 years. She is passionate about ensuring excellence in graduate programming and providing authentic experiences in practice.

Tonya Balch

Dr. Tonya Balch is a Professor in the Department of Applied Clinical and Educational Sciences in the Bayh College of Education at Indiana State University and has been the Program Coordinator for the School Counseling M.Ed. program for 15 years. She is passionate about ensuring excellence in graduate programming and providing authentic experiences in practice.

Dr. Balch obtained her Ph.D. in Educational Administration (School Administration focus) from Indiana State University and is a licensed school counselor in the state of Indiana. She has researched and presented numerous times on the counselor-administrator relationship, roles, and team. With a terminal degree in leadership, she fosters this skill set in her graduate students and assists them in understanding the power of a strong counselor-administrator team.

Dr. Balch is a member of the American Counseling Association and the American School Counseling Association. She is a member of the Indiana Counseling Association, receiving the President’s Award in 2013, and the Indiana School Counseling Association, receiving the Exemplary Counselor Educator Award in 2011. She has given presentations throughout the United States and internationally on topics ranging from mentorship of African American students to continuous school improvement to counselor-administrator teams and grief and loss. Tonya has published on topics such as effective transitions and leadership skills influencing student achievement and has written grants totaling more than $430,000 in sponsored program support for the human services profession. She is the coauthor of two books: Building Great School Counselor-Administrator Teams and Building Great Mental Health Professional-Teacher Teams published through Solution Tree Press.

Dr. Balch was a school counselor at the middle and high school level and served as the Guidance Director at Fountain Central High School for four years. She served on the Indiana School Counseling Association ad hoc ASCA Ethical Standards Review, 2015 and the Indiana Student Guidance Standards Review Committee, 2014.
