Farshid Safi

Farshid Safi, PhD, is an assistant professor of mathematics education at the University of Central Florida (UCF) in Orlando. Dr. Safi focuses on developing prospective teachers’ conceptual understanding of elementary and secondary mathematics, as well as connecting mathematical topics through the use of technology and dynamic software.

Farshid Safi

Farshid Safi, PhD, is an assistant professor of mathematics education at the University of Central Florida (UCF) in Orlando. Dr. Safi focuses on developing prospective teachers’ conceptual understanding of elementary and secondary mathematics, as well as connecting mathematical topics through the use of technology and dynamic software. His pedagogical approaches emphasize multiple representations, use of technology, and a problem-solving approach from an interdisciplinary perspective. He is very interested in creative ways to engage students in order to better understand the connections throughout the K–12 curriculum and regularly focuses on conceptual aspects of mathematics.

Prior to joining UCF, Dr. Safi was an associate professor of mathematics education at the College of New Jersey. He has taught mathematics and mathematics education content and methods courses at many institutions throughout the United States and Canada, including the University of Florida, the University of North Florida, and the University of British Columbia. As a high school mathematics teacher in Florida, he taught courses ranging from algebra to Advanced Placement calculus courses.

Dr. Safi has recently coauthored the book Making Sense of Mathematics for Teaching High School. He continues to write articles for state, national, and international publications, including the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) journal, Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School, as well as regularly providing professional presentations throughout the United States. He is an active member of Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (AMTE) and NCTM at the national and state levels.

Dr. Safi received a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in mathematics with a focus on teaching from the University of Florida, and a doctorate in education (with an emphasis in mathematics education) from the University of Central Florida.
