Jessica’s sister, Alex Dixon, had a stroke on Jessica’s tenth birthday. In order to share her perspective as a sibling of a child with special needs, Jessica coauthored the medical memoir A Stroke of Luck: A Girl’s Second Chance at Life with Dr. Juli K. Dixon.
After developing severe Tourette syndrome at the age of 14, Jessica realized that her role had changed. As a high-achieving student with a disability, Jessica examined the principles of the Universal Design for Learning and identified the errors in the application of these principles for students such as herself. As a living case study, Jessica presents on the application of these principles for high-achieving students with disabilities in order to help them reach their full potential.
Now 17 years old, Jessica has presented keynotes at state and national education conferences in the areas of mathematics education and special education.
