Julia E. Torres

JJulia E. Torres is a librarian, veteran language arts teacher, and teen programs administrator in Denver, Colorado, recognized across the United States for her work. Julia has been an educator since 2005 and a librarian since 2018. She focuses on culturally inclusive literacy instruction and incorporating best practices of librarianship within language arts praxis.

JJulia specializes in literacy curriculum and instruction for secondary learners and their leaders. She has taught every secondary grade level and was the librarian for five co-located middle and high schools in Denver Public Schools’ Far Northeast region. Julia has also taught high school concurrent enrollment courses and served as an adjunct instructor for Community College of Aurora and Metropolitan State University of Denver. She has national and international experience providing professional development workshops and conference keynotes on the intersections of language arts instruction, culturally responsive librarianship, and more.

JJulia is a past president of the Colorado Language Arts Society, a state affiliate of the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE). She served as the secondary representative at large for the executive committee of the NCTE from 2018 to 2020. In 2020, Julia was selected to be a Library Journal Mover and Shaker. That same year, she was awarded the title of secondary teacher of the year by the Colorado NCTE affiliate organization.

Julia holds a master’s degree in secondary education curriculum and instruction with a focus on secondary language arts instruction from the University of Phoenix, a master of arts degree in creative writing from Regis University, and a master of library and information science degree from the University of Denver.
