Mark A. Fletcher
Mark Fletcher is the principal of Bloomington High School South (BHSS) in Indiana, which has been a National Model PLC since 2012. Mark has more than 20 years of experience leading professional learning communities, including creating a PLC culture, sustaining results in a PLC, and managing RTI efforts.
Mark focuses with his staff to use PLCs to drive school improvement based around the four guiding questions of a PLC. This leads to collaborative efforts on mapping, assessment, intervention, and celebration as they relate to best teaching practices and maximizing student learning.
Mark’s efforts to promote RTI have led to a reduction in failures at BHSS. On average, his staff reduced failure rates from 20 percent to 3 percent across the school. This reduction corresponded with an improvement on a variety of state and national assessments where BHSS performed in the top 10 percent of schools in the state. This continued success resulted in BHSS earning multiple “4-Star” and “A” school ratings from the Indiana Department of Education.
Mark hosts several school staffs each year to assist them in their efforts to become professional learning communities. He is committed to education and is active in several professional organizations including the Indiana Association of School Principals and the National Association of Secondary School Principals.
A lifelong educator, Mark is also a guest lecturer at Indiana University. He earned bachelor’s degrees in economics and management, along with kinesiology, at DePauw University. He also earned master’s degrees in secondary education and education administration from Indiana University.
