Rich Rodriguez is principal of TeWinkle Intermediate School in Newport-Mesa Unified School District (NMUSD) in California. He led the implementation of an effective reading and math intervention model, serving an 85 percent socioeconomically disadvantaged and 45 percent English learners student population. Reading levels increased by three grades in one year. The results for math are similar. The model begins with a screening, then struggling students are diagnosed, placed in a targeted and flexible intervention, and monitored. Their academic performance index continues to rise.
During his tenure as principal of Newport Elementary School (also in the NMUSD), Rich led the implementation of a professional learning community with a successful Pyramid Response to Intervention and enrichment process. The Newport faculty created a highly collaborative culture in which proficiency rates hover at 90 percent in language arts and math. Newport is a 2010 California Distinguished School.
An experienced classroom teacher and administrator, Rich has presented to diverse audiences of faculty, community, and other school stakeholders on topics such as Pyramid Response to Intervention, common formative assessments, identifying essential standards/learning units, and the importance of culture in PLCs.
Rich earned a bachelor of science in business administration from Chapman University and a master of arts in education from Concordia University.
