Steven M. Wood

Steven M. Wood, PhD, is director of science at Adlai E. Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire, Illinois, where he provides support and leadership for science learning and the professional development of the science faculty. During his time at Stevenson High School, he has coached numerous sports teams and led international student travel groups.

Stevenson High School is one of only six schools to win the United States Department of Education (USD) National Blue Ribbon Award on five different occasions. It has been repeatedly cited as one of America’s top high schools and the “birthplace” of professional learning communities (PLC).

Dr. Wood is a member of many professional organizations, presenting extensively at state and national conferences. He has served on several committees for the National Science Teaching Association (NSTA), including Awards and Recognition, High School Teaching, and Coordination and Supervision of Science Teaching.

Dr. Wood completed his doctorate in educational leadership and policy studies at Loyola University Chicago. His research focused on the beliefs and practices of schools that lead to ensuring a rigorous learning experience for all students. He holds a master’s degree in biology from Northeastern Illinois University and a bachelor’s degree in biology education from Taylor University.
